Cutting trees

Cutting trees can advance from manual work, through semi-automatic using modes in the right window or at the bottom Harvest sub-menu, to fully automated done by trains. It's very similar to the harvesting. These jobs share the same Harvest/Cut Down tool at the bottom menu. You can use this tool for multiple selections and even set semi-automated mode for characters. They can cut down trees automatically once they fully grow and even replant them if they have seeds.

For efficient automation using trains is a good practice to select Automatic mode to None or set the priority to Paused. Both will cause characters not to do this job manually so they can focus on other tasks and this one is completely up to trains.
